Purring is a method of communication kittens learn from their mothers. The mother uses purring to comfort her litter. Your Ragdoll cat learned this behavior from its mother and will continue to purr as an adult. Cats purr as a sign of happiness or pleasure; however, they may also purr when they are upset or anxious.
It is believed purring is caused by blood circulation near the throat which causes the vibrations. Other studies indicate that the purring sounds are caused but muscular vibrations in the larynx. No one knows for certain why or how cats purr.
