What to do if Your Ragdoll Cat is Lost
Dec 2nd, 2005 by Rob
Ragdoll cats are primarily indoor cats. This creates a problem if your cat is ever lost. Indoor cats are less prepared for being lost then their outdoor cousins. All cats have outdoor instincts built in them as cats are territorial animals. The problem with an indoor cat is that their territory is inside your house. Indoor cats have limited experience with the outdoors and become frightened easily. When this happens they will seek the first hiding place available. When your terrified Ragdoll cat finds a hiding place they will most likely stay there until dark. At this point your Ragdoll might find its way home by scent or retracing its steps; however, this is difficult for an indoor cat that has little or no experience finding its way home.
How to Find Your Cat
Begin your search as soon as possible. More than likely your Ragdoll cat hasn’t gone far, it is frightened and hiding. Look for places the cat can hide, beginning with the spot your cat escaped. Look under bushes, your porch, shed, or garage. Don’t forget to look in trees and areas your cat could climb to. While you are looking call your cat’s name. Your cat probably won’t come running but it may cry in response. If you are unable to find your cat try looking again after nightfall. Retrace your steps with a flashlight and you may find your cat when it comes out of hiding. If you do find your Ragdoll be careful when you approach. If you startle your cat it may bolt and run to another hiding place.
The next step you could take is to place food and water near the area your cat exited. After your cat eats it may hide again, but may choose a spot closer to home. Also put some of your cat’s toys near the food. This will calm your Ragdoll and keep it close by. Talk to all of your neighbors and let them know your Ragdoll cat has gone missing. Enlist your neighbors help to find your cat and get their children involved. Talk to people that pass through your neighborhood; joggers, walkers, the mail carrier, workers, and security guards can all keep an eye out for your Ragdoll cat.
Create posters with a photograph of your cat and post them throughout the neighborhood, at the pet store, animal shelter, and vet’s office. Take out a classified ad in your local newspaper; keep an eye on the paper to see if any found animal ads resemble your cat.
Most importantly, never give up. Keep looking even if months go by. It can take an indoor cat this much time to eventually find its way home.
