Our new ragdoll kitten has been biting (gently) when we got her home at 12 weeks old. We thought it was cute, then quickly stopped as we noticed it might lead to bad habits.
Now she is 5 months old and her biting is getting vicious!
It hurts and she pounces at people with her ears back and attacks! She even went for my face the other day while I was petting her!
She gets enough food, attention and toys, but doesn't seem interested. She is like the QUEEN of the house and her incessant biting is getting to all of us and the kids don't want to play with her anymore. She is unpredictable at any given time! I say, "NO" firmly each time and put her in her little room. Nothing has helped. Can anyone help?! Otherwise I fear this gorgeous cat won't have a place in my daughter's heart anymore. (she got her for her birthday which is what wanted for years!)

Hi Jane Meechan

your cat is doing territorial marking. You should neuter him asap, and that behaviour should stop, or lessen.

With cats and dogs, unless they are being used in a breeding program, they should be neutered to prevent prostate and other cancers... like the old expression, if you aren't using it, lose it.

To take away the smell, try diluted hydrogen peroxide which will get rid of the biological aspects, and a carpet cleaner to get rid of anything else. Make sure you dilute the peroxide 3:1, and get as much out of the fabric/rug as you can, or you might lose a bit of the colour. This worked for me with my male dog before I neutered him.

I tried spraying the cat and that did not work. I did some research, and I bought a product called SSScat, which is a can of compressed air with a motion sensor on top. You don't have to be in the room with the cat when she gets into the tub, you just have to put the SSScat on the edge of the tub and just wait for the SSS noise and see her running out of the bathroom. Diva used the sink to try to show me she was boss, and I put the SSScat on the sink deck, and 2 squirts cured her....... she didn't even dare to go near the tub.

I also put it on my dresser; I like to do a Sudoku game before I turn off the light, and she would go onto the dresser and start knocking things off because she wanted the light off. I put the SSScat on the dresser, she got SSSSed once and she hasn't gone onto it since.

I have loaned it to a friend for her renegade non Ragdoll cat, and it's working.

You can get them at Petsmart for about $40, and it's worth it. I am thinking of getting another 2 or 3, and rent them out by the month for those who don't want to spend the money.

My rag has no issues with the cat box right now. There is an inconvienence we experienced with the litter maid box however. There was some temper trantrums he spewed over the box not having as much litter as he wanted it to have. Too much litter and that the box wont clean well either. (talking about the awful litter maid) There is no answer really so many of these questions because all humans and cats are different. Bottom line, find what they like and what they want. If they aren't happy, you won't be happy. Regardless of cost, they see it as "it's your problem, not mine"!

My rag liked to urinate by the rake. Which lead to the motor working to hard or the motorized cat box not being able to clean it self. My rag uses a regular cat box now and we are all happy. Litter maid was not functional for us because its very long and when you have to clean it or change out the litter it really is a pain to do as you have to take the whole thing apart to do it. Side caps and pieces did not work well. In all we lost a few hundred bucks and got nothing. Also, it's gross walking by or having company over and looking at the cat's issues in the box. We bought the canopy and it made it stink more. That was no good. It does not hold a of litter and the cat is large and eats and drinks more than other cats. This is a larger breed period. Second to the maincoon cat. We fixed it by getting rid of the box. I have to say aside from the issue the rag uses the box with no problems. With the robo cop litter box as I called it, it seems the cat was no happy. Try changing out your cat box to something the cat likes.

Those tiny little igloo boxes and those small boxes are horrible. These cats are like having dogs in your house because they are big. You would not be happy in a tiny toilet. Clean the box every single day. Change out all littler once a week or sooner. Put a little baking soda for odors and pay less than having those smelly deoderizers in the little. Small amount meaning, 3 table spoons and mix it. If the dust is too much use a wooden or paper kind of litter. We like the fresh step clumping litter and earn points when we buy it. Smells good and cleans up nice. Cats like their boxes clean because it does not flush like a tiolet. We aren't that different on what we like on the potty either.

If the cat won't go number 1 in the potty take it to the vet. Not going for 2 days means its almost dead or something is wrong. It could be crystals etc... urinating / bladder infections that are treating cheaply with an antibiotc for 7 days. It's worse than paying a larger bill if you let it go. If you clean you cat's box every day you can see perfectly if they are going in it. Won't take long to notice. Sometimes people food that is not what the rag needs.

My rag and I have gone through every brand of wet food and cat food. We finally found something he would eat. So we leave him on it and make no other exceptions. I take him to the vet frequently. Even if it's just for a check up. Around every 6 months or if a problem arises.

Next, I disagree with the section about horseplaying. We don't have two cats because they entertain eachother and don't entertain me as much. I like attention from my kitty too. I agrevate him playing with him only to play. When he wants to play he will bring me a toy. That's when we play. I use teasers to agrevate my rag and he loves it. When I make the bed the gets under the sheets like asking me to play peek a boo with him. We have several games we play. When he is ready to play he lets you know. Never has he bite us. He licks us and or runs off and that means "STOP" because I am tired of playing now. And we never horse around to HURT him. Yo have to guess a lot whe you have a baby. If you can't play the guessing game than a rag might not be for you. I think some agrevevation is good for them when playing. Just don't hurt your rag to be flat out MEAN. The have feelings. We buy him those pet laser. Never pointing them on his eyes. Sometimes I grab him and scratch his foot because it tickles him. He runs in circles around the house. He seems to enjoy it and come back for more. When company comes over my rag will greet them but will not lay on a stranger and will not play with a stranger. A stranger can pet them and he does talk to them to say hello. He knows who to play with. He knows we won't hurt him and he trusts us. That's it! Cat's can't be left out for decoration. A lazy cat can be one older or simply needing exercise. Since he won't play with strangers, we don't worry about him biting anyone. He doesn't even bite us.

Also, my rag is never quite. In fact, he never shuts up! He talks in the morning and until bed time. Talks when you are in the shower and he waits for you. If we eat dinner he talks too because maybe you forget his dinner or he can small the food so he wants a kitty treat at that moment. My rag does not get on my couch but likes my counter tops and my computers. Including my bed because he sleeps with me. We have a lot of talks together. He lets me know what he wants and how quickly he wants it. And when we are having a romantic moment watching a movie together, sometimes he looks at me and lets out a meow that also sounds like he is saying "I Love You". I reply with, "I love you too".

Back to the litter issue. When I had the litter maid box, my rag would get irritated when the "fill line" matched the amount if litter there. It just was not enough little for him. My last cat was the same way. He goes number 1 & 2 in larger sums. So he would do a #2 outside the box every so often. When he was changed to a regular box, we never had that problem again.

This rag does not like ice in his water but my last one did. Go figure! They are all different. We don't own them. They own us! Hope this helps. I agree with face push method for disapline but then his feelings get hurt and it kills me later. He forgives quickly though. I hate to see him mope.

My female 2 year old ragdoll is constantly doing #2 outside of her litter box. It does not matter if the litter box if very clean or abit dirty she still goes wherever she wants to! It is frustrating my family so much we are thinking of finding a new home for her.

My Rag does not have litter box problem. I keep moving his litter box from one place to another but he always find it. Ragdolls are the best cats you cab possibly have.

Do Ragdoll cats commonly have litter box problems? ie. doing #2 outside litterbox.
What are the common health problems related to the breed?
Are they fairly quiet?
