Teach a cat tricks? Never! That’s what most will tell you; however, your Ragdoll cat can be trained. The cats you see on television are proof enough that it can be done, and you don’t have to be a cat wrangler to teach your Ragdoll cat. Your cat can lean to stay, sit, fetch and many other tricks thought to be reserved for dogs.
To train your cat you will use a combination of praise, treats, and a dash of trickery. Cats are cunning creatures, sometimes it’s best to use this to your advantage when training. Rewarding with treats is the most effective training method for simple tricks like “sit.”
To teach your Ragdoll cat to sit, start by using the command “Sit.” After you give the command show you cat the treat. If you need to coax your cat into the sitting position by pushing on its bottom, do so and then immediately praise and give the treat. Do this consistently for several days and soon you’ll find your Ragdoll cat sitting on command.
To teach your Ragdoll cat to “sit up,” use the same procedure with a treat. Holding the treat above your Ragdoll’s head, give the command “Sit Up.” Once your cat sits up for the treat, reward your Ragdoll with praise and the treat.
The best time for train your Ragdoll cat is shortly before mealtime; as long as you aren’t forcing your cat, you can teach just about any of the tricks normally reserved for dogs.
