Ragdoll Kittens: Where Not to Find One

by Rob on October 23, 2010

Never buy a cat from a pet store. The animals found in pet stores often come from puppy and kitten mills only concerned with their profits. The kittens and puppies are often raised in inhumane and unsanitary conditions and are abused. Pet supply stores are an excellent place to purchase toys, scratching posts, and cat food, just not pets.

Another source to avoid or at least be very careful with is the “backyard breeder.” Backyard breeders are individuals that breed Ragdolls with little concern for breeding standards. The kittens from these breeders are rarely registered and may be mixed breed kittens. It is possible to get a healthy kitten from one of these breeders; however, if you are looking for a registered Ragdoll cat, backyard breeders are not the way to go. By purchasing your kitten from a quality breeder you will ensure your Ragdoll cat has the best chance of a healthy, happy life.

I found my cat at Petsmart – they have animals from humane societies. The store I visited was in El Paso, Tx. The wee kitty I got was a “Siamese mix” and very cute. As he grew and grew and grew and his hair got longer and longer I knew I had something special. Luckily I had a couple of friends who had Ragdolls and I saw the look immediately. I now go to a vet who has Ragdolls and hers look so much like mine – a Lynx Point – Dark taupe/brown back, white throat/chest – feet – nose and the “tabby” M or W on his forehead. Until I searched the sites I was worried about his weight – he is about one year old and weighed 17.6 lbs atlast check. Now I realize I needn’t have him on such a diet. Thanks for all the info.

I have a 3 yr old ragdoll that I am looking for a home for. We have had her since she was 5 months old. I love her. However my family doesn’t like cats and wants a dog. Can’t afford both. She is TICA pet quality. I live in VA. Interested reply to this thread.

Thank you so much for all of the good info. A couple of months after my 12 yr old Maltese went to Rainbow Bridge I could no longer stand being alone and having no fur baby to take care of. Would have loved another Maltese but I have been ‘walking challenged’ the last four years and had to depend on others to give my Romeo good walks. I knew it was time for a cat and the management here told me whichever cat I rescued must be at least one yr. old. I went to Animal Control and the very last cat, the last cage held the most beautiful fur baby, the sign said she was a 3 yr old Blue Point Himilayan and I had no idea they were wrong about the breed. A friend came over and told me, I looked it up on the internet and sure enough my LiNa is a Blue Point Ragdoll. Just beautiful. She was found running in and out of traffic on a busy street corner. Was finally caught and brought to the pound. They had her a while and no one came to look for her. I am an animal lover, love all animals, yet this little fur baby ran from me for about the first month I had her. Broke my heart and I was overjoyed when she finally showed me some love. She is not a lap cat and I suspect she never will be but she loves me now, I can feel it. She has trained me to give her too many treats and I now I need to cut that down. I was worried about her weight gain. When she came home she was at 10 lbs and after six months has gained 2 lbs. She actually eats very little at one time. Thanks to my reading your good articles here I feel now the weight gain is normal. I have been getting my cat food free as I am low income and with PAWS but now I am going to buy the dry food myself and trying to figure out what is best for her at 3 yrs old. PAWS has been bringing me cat food for ages
7 and older and I have not/will not feed her that. At the pound they feed the cats a brand called HALO but I don’t know if that is really good and right for my fur baby. LiNa acts like she hates it when I go out, I have decided to buy a thing ..guess it is called a pet stroller.
Seems like it is safe, she would be enclosed all the way but be able to see everything around her. This would even encourage me getting out and walking more. I have severe Peripheral Neuropathy and have constant pain but I need to walk so I can get stronger. Sounds like a win-win situation but of course I would have to see it in person and make sure it is safe and secure.
Thanks so much for reading..I know I went on and on and on… etc
