Maintaining a litter box is one of the most unpleasant aspects of cat ownership. If your Ragdoll cat has accidents outside the box it is important to keep the box as clean as possible to promote proper litter box use. When cleaning up you need to clean as thoroughly as possible to eliminate the scent and prevent repeat offenders.
When cleaning up it is important to use an enzyme based cleaner to neutralize the odor. If you use regular household cleaning products the odor may resurface and your cat will be attracted to that area. There are a variety of enzyme based products designed specifically for neutralizing cat urine available from your local pet supply store.
Never used ammonia based products to clean accidents or your litter box. Ammonia gives urine its strong smell; using ammonia based cleaner could put your Ragdoll cat off using the litter box. When cleaning up accidents on carpet avoid scrubbing. Scrubbing carpet pushes the accident into the pad below the carpet making it extremely difficult to eliminate the smell. Pouring a large amount of table salt on the stain will draw liquid out of the carpet. Make sure you remove all the salt before using any cleaning products on the area.
When cleaning your litter box you may want to use rubber gloves. Your litter box is a breeding ground for bacteria and you could contract an infection by coming in contact with used cat litter. When cleaning the box itself, use cleaners with very little scent. A heavily scented cleaner could be repulsive to your cat.
The best way to prevent your Ragdoll cat from going outside the litter box is to maintain a meticulously clean box. Make sure your litter box is in a private location; if you have more than one cat in your household you might want to consider setting up more than one litter box.
