Preventing Feline Urinary Tract Infections

Urinary Tract Infections are simple to diagnose in your Ragdoll cat. The most obvious way to tell is if your cat cries while using the litter box. If you find blood in your cat’s urine that is a sure sign as well; also refusing to use the box when urinating is a telltale sign. If you observe this condition in your Ragdoll get to the veterinarian immediately. Infections of this type are extremely painful for your cat.
There are steps you can take to prevent an infection. One is to monitor the pH of your Ragdoll’s urine. Test kits are available on the Internet and at your local pet supply store. The advantage of monitoring your cat’s urine is you will save your Ragdoll a lot of pain by heading infections off before they develop.
In order to take accurate readings with these kits you need to maintain a clean litter box. Your Ragdoll cat will appreciate a clean litter box regardless of the testing. Once your Ragdoll has finished in the box use one of the pH strips to test the urine. Compare the test strip to the chart to determine pH. A healthy pH should be within the rage of 6.5 to 6.8. If the reading is out of this range contact your veterinarian.
Test strips are not the most accurate method to check for infection. Your cat’s diet can affect the results. If your results are abnormal test again; if the results are out of range call your veterinarian.
