It is possible for your Ragdoll cat to exist in harmony with your home furnishings. You don’t have to settle for shredded drapes and furniture, or even snagged carpets and rugs. Your cat scratches as a form of exercise and recreation; not just to sharpen the claws. Even a cat that has been de-clawed will scratch. Scratching is an instinct built in them. Your job is to channel this scratching into an object suited for scratching. Sisal rope is an excellent choice; a tall scratching post wrapped in sisal rope would be ideal for every room of the house. Once you have the appropriate scratching materials for your Ragdoll cat lightly spray the post with catnip extract. This will encourage your cat to scratch the post and not your sofa.
As for the furnishings in your home a little common sense will save you a great deal of agitation. When choosing carpet or fabrics it is a good idea to avoid satins and textured weaves. These fabrics along with leather are cat scratching magnets. Stick to strong materials with a tight weave to them. Whatever you choose stick to a smooth or medium texture; cats do not like smooth surfaces for scratching.
The next step is to keep your Ragdoll cat’s claws trimmed. Once you have your cat accustomed to regular nail trimmings you will be able to do this quickly and easily.
