Is he alone all the time except for the 30 minutes he spends with you? Ragdolls and most cats, like to live with their people...being in the same area most of the time. They all retreat for a short amout of time, but how would you like to be out of contact with anyone for that amount of time. You are his world. Ragdolls need lots of attention and company....they are like one of the family. Perhaps he could stay with someone who loves cats until your house is available. (as long as they don't let him go outside). They are too trusting of people to be able to take care of themselves, and should always be an indoor cat) He could definitely develop behavior problems living in a basement with only 30 minutes interaction.
