Does your Ragdoll cat turn its nose up at mealtimes? Finicky mealtime behavior can be a difficult problem to overcome. Here are some tips to help you overcome finicky eating habits.
Are You Changing Your Ragdoll’s Food?
If you frequently change your Ragdoll cat’s food, that could be the source of your problem. If your cat doesn’t like one type of food you provide, it may wait to see what the next kind of food you offer is. If you have one type of food your Ragdoll eats, do not change it.
Do You Like Providing Variety in Your Ragdoll’s Diet?
If you feed your cat a variety of foods it can come to expect that variety all the time. Feeding your cat scraps from the table or other human foods can cause finicky habits when it comes to cat food. Premium cat foods are balanced for the nutritional needs of your cat; adding people food to the mix will upset this balance and could make your Ragdoll obese.
Are Your Children Slipping Your Ragdoll Cat Scraps at the Table?
If a family member is slipping your Ragdoll cat people food this could be the cause of the finicky behavior. People food upsets the nutritional balance of your cat’s food. These excess calories may be the reason your cat has no appetite for cat food. If a family member is pampering your Ragdoll cat with treats and you stop this activity, your Ragdoll may start eating the cat food normally.
Is Your Ragdoll Cat Eating Out of the Garbage?
If you suspect your cat may be eating out of the garbage this could be the source of the finicky eating behavior. Some cats raid the trash regardless of how well they eat. This is a potentially dangerous behavior that could make them very sick. To stop your cat from eating the trash, use a trashcan with a tight fitting lid. Keep your Ragdoll cat indoors at all time to prevent it from eating your neighbor’s trash.

Do Ragdolls typically have soft stools? What cat/kitten food should I be feeding my Ragdoll kitten?
My kitten had liquid poo since I brought him home from the breeder (they said he had a bug, which I was willing to work through). After weeks and countless fecal swabs, microscopes, and even sending poo to California for testing, we could find no parasite. That was a lot of money down the drain
I started experimenting with his food– he’d been fed beef babyfood, EVO kitten, Wellness kitten (he is SUPER picky so I bought a variety of premium wet food to see what he liked). That may have been the problem in the beginning– the countless food switching. However, I noticed that anything with poultry (chicken/duck/turkey/quail) would guarantee diarrhea, whereas with beef, venison, or fish he would poo solid 90% of the time. I think he just cannot digest poultry very well.
So ultimately, I put fiber in his food (Konsyl, a bulk-forming powder) and feed him a rotation of poultry-free (no meat, broth, liver, or eggs) foods. His breakfast and dinner are either 5.5 oz of Weruva Mack & Jack or Weruva Polynesian BBQ, but I will throw in maybe 4 oz a day of 1 or 2 of the following: Weruva Outback Grill, Wellness Surf & Turf, Wellness CORE Herring, EVO Beef, and EVO Venison. Since the diarrhea left him a bag of bones, I’ve also fed cheddar cheese and sardines in olive oil (as low sodium/organic as I can find). I’m so relieved that at 7 months he’s 7.5 lb.
I know this is much longer than you probably wanted, but I hope it helps!
My kitty Sammi Ragdoll mix who looks exactly like a pre breed, she has very hard stools and thank GOD I had the good since to switch to Fancy Feast from Science Diet junk food.. I add water to her food, since FF has less carbs she has lost weight too, I weigh a 3 of my kitties every few months since my 12 year old Ragdoll mix has diabeties I keep up on the weights of everyone.. Since I did change the food from high carbs all 3 kitties have lost 1.5 pounds in 8 months.. all 3!! ONE GOOD THING the lower carbs helps my D kitty but I am thinking of stepping up carbs to at least 9-10% for my NON D kitties..
