Taking your Ragdoll cat to the veterinarian can be a very expensive. There are some simple steps you can take to save money when going to the vet.

To protect yourself when paying for services, use a credit card. Under the Federal “Fair Credit Billing Act,” you have the right to dispute charges for unsatisfactory services. This is something you don’t have when paying your veterinarian bill with cash.

Before your Ragdoll needs shots or a checkup, shop around for price quotes. Compare vaccinations, exams, and other expensive services such as surgery rates and broken bones.

Don’t be afraid to ask for discounts. Many vets offer discounts for households with multiple pets. Senior citizens may be eligible for further discounts. Ask your veterinarian about using three year vaccination boosters instead of annual ones; compare prices for vaccinations in your veterinarian’s office with those offered by the humane society, SPCA, or pet supply store. You may be able to find free shot clinics for your Ragdoll cat’s vaccinations.

Keep detailed records and receipts for all of your veterinarian visits. These records will allow you to easily change veterinarians if there is a problem. If you have to utilize emergency animal clinics after hours, be sure and schedule all of your follow-up appointments with your regular veterinarian. Always get a second option for expensive procedures ordered by your veterinarian.

When your veterinarian prescribes medicine, ask for the prescription in writing so you can shop around for the medication; pet medicines are available online for discount prices. Ask for generic medicines whenever possible. For common medications check with your pharmacy, their prices will usually be much cheaper than your veterinarian’s.
