Hairballs and Your Ragdoll Cat

Hairballs are the most common ailment your cat will face. Your Ragdoll cat grooms itself constantly; as a result he or she swallows a great deal of fur in the process. This hair forms a ball that can get stuck in your cat’s digestive system instead of passing out the back end. When your cat starts hacking and coughing more than likely it is trying to work out a stuck hairball.
This is a very unpleasant process for you and your carpet; however, most cats are able to work out hairballs easily in this manner. Occasionally, a hairball will make it into your cat’s intestines and form a blockage. This can create a life threatening condition that requires medical attention. If your Ragdoll cat has frequent problems with hairballs talk to your veterinarian about ways to prevent this. One simple thing you can do to prevent hairballs is brush your cat often. Brushing removes loose fur so your cat won’t swallow it while grooming. There are also several varieties of hairball reducing food available that could help reduce the frequency of hairballs.
