Ragdoll Cats: Hairball Control
Jun 21st, 2006 by Rob
Many makers of premium cat foods offer “Hairball Reducing” varieties of their cat food. Does hairball control cat food really work? According to premium cat food maker Iams, their brand of hairball management cat food is very effective in reducing hairballs.
Hairballs, as the name implies, are a ball of hair your Ragdoll has swallowed. When Ragdoll cats groom their fur they swallow loose hair. This hair collects in the stomach and intestine and can form a dense, matted ball of fur. If your cat is unable to pass the hairball in the conventional manner of their dinner, they will cough and hack until vomiting the hairball all over your hardwood floor. In addition being an unpleasant mess to clean up after, hairballs can become a serious health risk if your Ragdoll cat is unable to pass them. If a hairball becomes lodged in your cat’s intestine, a blockage can form that will require expensive surgery to correct. Ragdoll cats have quite a bit of loose fur which makes them very susceptible to hairballs. Any food that delivers on its promise to reduce hairballs would be a godsend, provided your Ragdoll cat would eat it.
Iams claims their hairball management cat food has been extensively researched and will result in an 80-100% increase in the hair your cat passes in the litter box. The food that accomplishes this feat of modern science is a mixture of beet pulp and cellulose. Iams researchers decided this was the most effective blend to remove hair from your Ragdoll cat’s digestive system. According to Iams, cats that eat their beet food do not have hairballs. The question then becomes, will your Ragdoll cat eat a beet? (Personally I can’t stand beets)
According to Iams, the beets promote good intestinal health in cats. Beets spiked with cellulose encourage the passing of hair from your cat without forming a hairball. Iams is an excellent brand of premium cat food. If you are a Ragdoll cat owner struggling with hairballs and can get your Ragdoll to eat their beet food, Iams Hariball Management formula could be the answer to your hairball problem.
