Allowing a newly adopted cat to adjust is very important. I just adopted a 9 yr old Siamese mix. It took her a little over 3 weeks to completely adjust with the household of other cats and to us. But with a little time and slowly allowing her to progress on her own time was key. Now she gets around the house with no problem at all and is not afraid of any of us.
