Hey guys, sorry I haven't updated u about young Alaska..

He is now 7 months and losing an extreme amount of fur. Now I put this down to the fact where I live, we are currently entering Spring so it was warming up (Mind you were having record high temperatures for winter.) Now I heard that ragdolls did not lose fur. If this is true, then something is wrong. I will spend 10minutes a day brushing him with a rubber glove and a normal brush to remove any knots. 10 minutes because he gets distressed after!! From 10 minutes of brushing I get a VERY large ball of fluff which covers my entire hand! That is on top of all the fur that gets lost in the air while I brush AND the fur he loses he time we touch him! When we simply touch him we get a handful of fur! We are finding large balls of fluff just rolling along the floor. Thirty minutes ago I gave him a bath and the hair loss was more than I had seen ever.

Please note that he does NOT have bald spots on his body. His back seems to be the only place that loses fur. He has not changed his toiletry habits, though we have moved him to a supermarket wet food which we used to feed our old cat. I can't imagine him being under any sort of extra stress as nothing has changed in the environment.

Our old cat never shed as much as this, and she was a Chinchilla. It is even affecting the running of my computer as it is blocking up the fan causing it to over heat. My mother and I have both been removing fur from it on a daily basis.

Anyone have any ideas??

i was told by my breeder that ragdolls does not shed much- it is completely untrue. mine sheds alot and i comb him everyday. everyday the comb is full- and the more i comb - the more comes out- so welcome to the world of raggie fur !

It really depends on your Raggie's coat - some Raggies have more of a woolly coat and some more silky but they will shed to some greater/lesser degree and more so at start of Winter and Summer.

Keep up the regular daily brushing. Also think of feeding your cat a premium food such as Royal Canin Hair and Skin. I changed my cats over to this and noticed a difference in their coats within about six weeks. Have you tried a grooming tool called the Furminator http://www.pinkypawz.com/furminator-for-cats-p-400.html This may prove really useful.

Maybe worth getting him checked out at the vets anyway if the fur loss is so great.

Hope this helps.

Here are some photos ive taken of the fur loss. This was very rough and quick sweep of his cat tree. I did not even add the fur from the couch, clothes or that happened to be laying on the floor..

Ive also places the ball of fluff up against a few everyday items so u can get an idea. 3rd Generation 2008 iPod Nano and an everyday CD.

Recent Picture of Alaska. Taken with my webcam, so sorry for the bad quality. He loves to sit on that box behind me while Im on the computer..

Does the fur loss seem over the top for you guys? Remembering that this was only a few minute run over his cat tree, nothing more.

As I said, we have him on Whiskas cat food at the moment, and can't really afford to go to a more expensive brand (assuming Royal Canin is more expensive. We previous had him on Advance Kitten but he didn't seem to eat the wet food. We still feed him Advance Kitten Plus dry food). I think he is a very picky eater. He will scoff down a beef flavored dinner but chicken or chicken and tuna he will take all night to eat xP

Thanks for your help,

Shazzy.

Royal Canin is a little more expensive but it is a lot better and your cat would probably need to eat less of it if you get my drift and is not so full of "fillers" as say Whiskas or cheaper brands.

My friend has a Raggie with a big coat and she would probably get that amount of fur off him in a session but he is HUGE.

Look into getting the furminator - may help.

None of that fur came off his body directly. It was not a grooming session, only a brief wipe over his cat post.

But if its normal, then I guess its OK. It's just very annoying see as were practically breathing fur at the moment, and its not enjoyable to love and cuddle him because you get so much fur everywhere.. (Though dont worry, we still give him lots of love and attention like normal xP)

He still doesn't understand boundaries. He will jump straight onto the bench as im pouring a drink and actually attempt to drink from my glass! He scratches all the chairs and they are now RUINED because they have been ripped apart. We squirt him with he scratches chairs, place him at his cat scratcher and get him to stretch on that then tell him hes a good boy. If he scratches the post on his own, we will give him a treat and tell him what a good boy he is but he does not do it willingly. If I leave him out in the kitchen or lounge room on his own I will find him on the bench, eating off plates that are in the sink or drinking out of cups, even though he has a full bowl of fresh water and food...

Is still very rough, is not learning to be gentle and is leaving blood and scratches all over me and my family.

All up, hes cheeky, but we love him to bits and cant imagine our lives without him.

Our Ragdoll sheds a lot too, and he HATES the brush. I would switch his food to a high quality holistic food. He will still continue to shed but grocery store brands aren't all that healthy for kitty. Ours eats Wellness in the yellow bag. He loves it; it's got no corn or wheat for allergies, and he doesn't vomit this stuff like he used to when he was fed the Hill's w/d.
