Feed Your Ragdoll Cat the Right Food
Jul 26th, 2006 by Rob
The pet food industry in the United States is a multi-billion dollar industry. Retail cat food sales alone account for a large part of that. With so many choices for your cat’s food, how do you know which food is right for your kitten? Your kitten should be weaned before arriving at your home. Most breeders feed their cats premium, high quality cat food.
During the transition to your home you should continue feed whatever brand the breeder was feeding your kitten. This will minimize disruption to your kitten’s tummy. If your Ragdoll cat or kitten has been eating food from the grocery store you will want to transition to a higher quality food over time. Start gradually by adding in a small amount of premium kitten food to the existing food your cat or kitten has been eating. Over the course of two weeks reduce the amount of old food in the mix until your Ragdoll has transitioned to the quality cat or kitten food.
Here are the basic nutritional guidelines for your Ragdoll cat.
- Protein from a meat, fish, or poultry source
- Taurine, an essential amino acid
- Certain other vitamins, minerals, enzymes, and fatty acids
- Water
That’s pretty much it. Cats do not require carbohydrates, although corn, wheat, and rice are used as fillers for both canned and dry cat foods. Other ingredients, such as binders, flavoring, and coloring are added by cat food manufacturers to satisfy the aesthetic needs of the consumer; some preservatives are necessary to keep food fresh, you should always refrigerate unused canned food after you open it.
Please give me some name brand cat food I can give my ragdoll cat. The person I bought the cat from has been getting the food for the cat, but we will be moving out of the area.
Thank you
I have been feeding my Ragdoll kitten (now 10 mos) Royal Canin and his coat is BEAUTIFUL. The veternarian and others have agreed that Royal Canin (while it is a bit more expensive than most) is a perfect brand name food.
I personally don’t care for Royal Canin. I try to stay away from any food that uses Wheat and/or Corn Gluten. Royal Canin uses this. The breeder I purchased my kitten from used it. I’m in the process of switching her to Wellness - they have grain free formulas and it is Human-Grade Food.
I have a 18mth old ragdoll cat which I did not get as a kitten. I am having a problem with her feeding. She eats dry and canned food, and I have been giving her small amounts of liver/heart every night. She is fed at night with the canned food and a small amount of liver etc which she eats during the night, then has dry food during the day until late in the day. My problem is that she sometimes get sick (appox every 3rd day )and brings up a small amount of the food not digested and with no sign of a furball.
What am I doing wrong.
