Emergency Medical Care for Your Ragdoll Cat
Jan 5th, 2006 by Rob
In case of a medical emergency the most important thing you can do for your Ragdoll cat is to keep a cool head and quickly get to a veterinarian.
If the emergency occurs outside of your veterinarian’s office hours call an emergency animal clinic. It is a good idea to have the numbers ready near your phone. CPR can be administered to a cat if your Ragdoll is not breathing; however, administering CPR can result in broken ribs and other internal injuries. When faced with the possibility of losing a Ragdoll cat that is not breathing, taking these risks may be your only option.
There are steps you can take to help your Ragdoll cat while on the way to the emergency clinic. Keep your Ragdoll warm by wrapping him or her in a blanket or towel. This will also help to restrict movement that could result in further injury.
If your Ragdoll cat is bleeding use a gauze bandage or a clean cloth to slow bleeding by applying pressure directly to the wound. Do this for injuries from cuts as well as bites.
For burns use a cold compress on the affected area and hold it there until you reach the emergency clinic.
If you suspect your cat has been poisoned do not try and force your cat to vomit; just get to the emergency clinic as quickly a possible.
In case of frostbite, warm your cat immediately. Use moist rags to warm frostbitten areas; change the rags frequently unit the affected tissue becomes flushed with blood. Frostbite affects ears and paws quickly so it is important to seek medical attention from your veterinarian as soon as possible.
