Communicating With Your Ragdoll Cat
Dec 8th, 2005 by Rob
Your Ragdoll cat speaks a different language than you; however, you can still communicate. Every cat expresses themselves differently; all cats share common signals you can read. These signals include the look in your Ragdoll’s eyes, tone of voice, orientation of ears, and the flicking of the tail. Interpreting these signals can tell you what your Ragdoll cat is feeling along with what its intentions are.
Many people talk to their cats. You might think it’s silly because your cat doesn’t understand you, right? Actually, cats do pick up on your conversation and respond to your voice. Cats also respond well to verbal praises.
Often when you speak to your Ragdoll cat, they will speak back. Your cat has a vocabulary that includes meows, chirps, and even grunts. By paying attention to these you will learn which ones your cat uses to express hunger, affection, pain, or even a passing hello. Your cat’s eyes can also tell you what your cat is feeling by their look or reaction.
Does your cat react to your touch by arching towards your hand or pulling away from it? If your Ragdoll is hunched down low there is an uneasy feeling; puffing out of the tail along with hair standing on end indicates hostility. Flickering of the tail indicates affection, thrashing of the tail shows agitation.
Ragdoll kittens are typically very eager to please their owners. Behaviors can be corrected using firm tone and demonstration. Use excited praises when your kitten utilizes the scratching post or litter box. Mature cats tend to get stuck in their ways and it may be difficult to correct behaviors in adult cats; however, the same rules apply. Be patient and never hit your Ragdoll cat.
