Just because your Ragdoll cat is an exclusively indoor cat does not mean there aren’t hazards in your home. There are steps you can take to ensure your home is cat friendly.

1. Make sure the plants you have in your home are completely out of reach or are of a non-poisonous variety. If you are unsure about which varieties are poisonous consult your veterinarian.

2. Keep your cat away from household cleaners. If you store your cleaning products under the sink consider using a child-proof latch on the cabinet. Also, when using the cleaning products insure that your cat is not present and there is adequate ventilation to dissipate any fumes.

3. Keep rat traps, insecticides, and roach traps away from your cat. The bait found in many of these products has a sweet scent that may attract your cat.

4. Never medicate your cat unless directed by your veterinarian. Avoid giving human medications such as aspirin as these can be toxic to a small animal.

5. Be careful with your prescription and over-the-counter medications. Always store these in a latched cabinet and keep all medication away from your cat.

6. Keep your cat away from household items such as coffee grounds, detergents, fabric softeners, batteries, cigarettes, alcohol, oil, antifreeze, and gasoline. It may be a good idea to make the entire garage off limits to your Ragdoll cat.

7. Do not use flea dips or similar products without consulting your veterinarian. When you do, always follow the instructions to the letter. These products contain chemicals that can make your cat sick.

8. Be careful using fertilizers and insecticides in your yard. Always follow the instructions for households with pets on these products.

9. Avoid using lead based paints on your home. When these paints flake off they can be inhaled or swallowed by your cat. Lead is toxic to cats and humans.

10. Finally, keep your Ragdoll cat indoors at all times. Ragdolls cats are not outdoor cats.
